During the years 1881 to 1884 over 17,000 chineese came to Canada to work on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). During their arrival already a sizeable chinese population following the gold rush in the 1850s, had spread as wel as racisim. Chinese workers, who accepted lower wages, took the jobs away from the white works. Furthermore the chinese culture was eerie to the white Canadians who did not comprehend Chinese cultural practices like, the way they dressed, living conditions, and funerals.
